Isolation and support networks

One of the biggest issues for new mums is isolation.   Many of us find our sense of identity in belonging to groups of one kind of another (“Yes, I’m a teacher, a lawyer, a netball player, a stamp collector…”) and groups is one thing that is not lacking.  Try and get out of the house and see a friend or support group.  Try these:

  • Antenatal or PIN group.
  • Mothers Network
  • PlaycentreSPACE group
  • Baby friendly fitness classes at your local gym or pool
  • Local community noticeboards
  • Other mums in your church, workplace, street etc

Or if you’re in an isolated area, try online forums on websites such as Huggies, Oh Baby and Little Treasures.

And if family is a major support for you, but they’re not in the same region or town, sort out your national/international calling phone plans and set yourself up for free video calling online with Skype – that way, they’re just a click away.
